When I lived in New York City I signed up for some Indian dance classes just for the fun of it. It was more aesthetic
than just going to a gym or an exercise class. One of the hardest things to do was tilt our heads from left to right which
characterizes Indian dance that is combined with the movement of the eyes. I arrived in Cochin in the southern most tip
of India and everyone I talk to does that movement all the time. From my point of view everyone is dancing. I still haven’t
quite figured out what it means as guess if I knew I wouldn’t think they were dancing. It is so prevalent that sitting down
in the business meeting with 4 or six men they are all tilting their heads from left to right... I left my purse in the restaurant
and the young man who is at the reception desk returned it to my room. As he left he backed away and tilted his head from
left to right. Last night as I was talking to the boss’s wife she would periodically tilt her head from left to right as we were
speaking. I’ve never seen this in any other culture and never realized that it was my culture to tilt my head up and down
in agreement !
